Architectural Lighting in Charleston, SC
Columns, facades, steps and old brick, washed from the ground in warm, quiet light.
Light the house, not just the garden
Lowcountry houses are built to be looked at: tall piazza columns, brick and clapboard facades, garden walls and wide front steps. After sunset most of that detail disappears. Architectural lighting brings it back with a few carefully placed low-voltage fixtures in the ground and hardscape rather than a wall of light.
We look at how your home is actually used in the evening, where guests arrive, which columns and walls deserve attention and which steps need to be seen, and light those places first, always from below. The result should feel calm and welcoming, with the architecture leading.
Facade & column wash
Small ground-mounted uplights in the beds wash piazza columns, pilasters and brick or clapboard facades from below, giving the house depth after dark without flattening it.
Wall grazing
In-ground well lights set close to the base of brick and stucco walls graze the surface upward and bring out the texture of old masonry.
Driveway & entry from the ground
Low path lights along the drive, uplit gate piers and a softly lit approach to the front steps, all from fixtures in the ground and in the same warm tone as the rest of the property.
Steps, hardscape & pavers
Low-voltage step lights, seat-wall and paver lighting that make brick and stone easier to walk at night and lovely to look at.
One plan for the whole property
Architectural lighting works best alongside landscape lighting for trees and paths, and permanent roofline lighting to frame the house from above. We design them together so the color of light and the brightness feel consistent from the street to the front door.

Frequently Asked Questions
Landscape lighting focuses on the garden: trees, beds and paths. Architectural lighting uses the same low-voltage fixtures in the ground and hardscape, aimed at the house and its stonework: facade and column wash, wall grazing, steps, pavers, the driveway and the approach to the entry. Most homes benefit from both, designed as one plan.
No. Everything we install is low-voltage exterior lighting: permanent roofline track on the trim, plus low-voltage landscape and architectural fixtures in the ground and hardscape. We don't do line-voltage work, interior lighting, porch-ceiling, recessed or hardwired fixtures.
It shouldn't. The aim is to reveal shape and texture with soft, warm light, keeping some shadow so the house still looks like itself at night.
Yes. Roofline pixels outline the house from above while ground-mounted architectural lighting brings out the facade, columns and steps below. We plan them together.
